Using YubiKeys

Picture of Yubikey 5

Numun has partnered with Yubico to distribute YubiKeys to feminist tech activists and allies. We acknowledge that there is no 100% security, but a single YubiKey has multiple authentication functions which can help further secure your email, online services and apps against unauthorised login and takeover. No software installation or battery is required, you can plug it into a USB port and touch the button to secure your authentication.

Setup instructions may vary slightly for different services, but in general:

  1. Go to your account Settings, then go to the Security. For example, in Google this will be myaccount.google.com/security
  2. Turn on 2-Step Verification if you haven’t, and add Security Key.
  3. Insert your YubiKey into your computer’s USB port. Once connected, tap the gold disk.
  4. Once your key has been registered, make sure you add a back up 2-Step verification such as back up codes, or another YubiKey, so that you can still log in if ever you lose your key.
