At heart feminist tech is about shifting power, an engagement with tech as a site for activism.
Every context and movement has their own understanding and experiences about what is Feminist Tech.
There is not a single definition.
For Numun, we prioritise feminist analyses of power and the leadership of communities who are most affected by developments in science and tech to define, challenge, make and reimagine technologies and their role in our lives.
Feminist Tech Playground
The FTP is a participant-led space to learn and share questions and ideas for feminist tech infrastructures.
It ran for the first time in 2022 in collaboration with APC, and convened 90 participants worldwide, who engaged in 21 play sessions.
Funding decisions rarely take a leap of faith on seeding spaces for play, exploration and experimentation, though they are at the heart of innovation, and they are also a key element of movement organising.
Feminist Tech dreamscapes
Through our “Seed, Grow and Sustain” open call we asked groups about their biggest, wildest dreams about Feminist Tech. Their responses helped us weave a collective imagination of how the future could look like:
“We dream about an ancestral future, where technology is an ally on the path to self-determination, autonomy and sovereignty of our communities”
“Technology as multiple communes and not commodity”
“A local hyper-media platform that celebrates the women in the area and their expression”
